{"id":559,"date":"2014-07-01T09:07:06","date_gmt":"2014-07-01T09:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olioweb.me.uk\/wordpress_marcus\/?p=559"},"modified":"2015-06-30T19:51:17","modified_gmt":"2015-06-30T19:51:17","slug":"poem-of-the-month-july-hydra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.olioweb.me.uk\/marcus\/?p=559","title":{"rendered":"Poem of the Month, July 2014: Hydra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HYDRA<\/p>\n<p>The blue sea Byron and my father knew<br \/>\nstretches away as far as the mainland.<br \/>\nCruise ships steam in and out of the harbour.<br \/>\nMen of my age sit around speaking Greek<br \/>\non terraces, worry beads in their fingers.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to be alone for a while<br \/>\nand occupy the Hydra in my soul.<br \/>\nI needed the platitudinous waves<br \/>\ngoing nowhere with arithmetical<br \/>\nprecision, solving Japanese ko-ans.<\/p>\n<p>My foot-soles will never tire of walking<br \/>\nthese whitewashed alleys and coastal paths.<br \/>\nBut give me a bench underneath a tree<br \/>\nwhere I can be myself and disappear<br \/>\noff the map of history for a while.<\/p>\n<p><em>June &#8217;14.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HYDRA The blue sea Byron and my father knew stretches away as far as the mainland.
