{"id":451,"date":"2014-02-28T11:46:37","date_gmt":"2014-02-28T11:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olioweb.me.uk\/wordpress_marcus\/?p=451"},"modified":"2024-08-19T16:43:05","modified_gmt":"2024-08-19T16:43:05","slug":"poem-of-the-month-march-2014-good-old-dublin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.olioweb.me.uk\/marcus\/?p=451","title":{"rendered":"Poem of the month, March 2014: Good Old Dublin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>GOOD OLD DUBLIN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(not previously published)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hop on and hop off &#8211;<br \/>\nthe musical bus driver<br \/>\ntakes us everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><i>The apparition<br \/>\n<\/i><i>of these faces in the crowd<\/i> &#8211;<br \/>\npebbles on a beach.<\/p>\n<p>Dublin&#8217;s fair city<br \/>\nwhere the girls are so pretty &#8211;<br \/>\ngoes the old ditty.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh rugby fans<br \/>\ntake to the streets like buffaloes<br \/>\nin bright red T-shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Above the traffic<br \/>\nsunlight paints the upper half<br \/>\nof handsome buildings.<\/p>\n<p>People packed into<br \/>\neateries and snuggeries<br \/>\ntalking and talking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">A billion voices &#8211;<br \/>\n<\/span>in the Chinese restaurant<br \/>\nwe are in China.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Saint Stephen&#8217;s Green &#8211;<br \/>\n<\/span>one tree in particular<br \/>\ncaptures my fancy,<\/p>\n<p>its spectacular<br \/>\nsunlit leafless crown swaying<br \/>\nin all directions.<\/p>\n<p>A bench in the sun &#8211;<br \/>\neminently huggable<br \/>\nwintery old elms.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">The Chester Beatty<br \/>\n<\/span>Library &#8211; Kuan Yin nestling<br \/>\namong the bibles.<\/p>\n<p>Celtic heritage &#8211;<br \/>\nthe bronze weapons of heroes<br \/>\nand their womenfolk.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration<br \/>\nof Irish independence &#8211;<br \/>\ntears stream down my cheeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOOD OLD DUBLIN (not previously published) Hop on and hop off &#8211; the musical bus driver takes us everywhere.
