ISLES OF GREECE<\/strong>
\nTo Platon Alexiades<\/em>
\nand Julia Cumberlege<\/em>
\nholidaying with us last year<\/em><\/p>\n

I feel like going to Poros
\nand gathering Grecian shells
\nwith all the sweet Anitas
\nand the luscious Anabels.<\/p>\n

Why do women hide things?
\nWhy don’t they open up,
\nand tell you if they like you
\nand would gladly fill your cup?<\/p>\n

I’m doomed to disappointment,
\nmust hark to Nature’s laws.
\nI’ll never get the girls I love
\nbetween my sticky paws.<\/p>\n

\n

PINK TREES<\/strong>
\nat dawn<\/em><\/p>\n

The Figs are screaming for water,
\nthe pigeons are nibbling the hedge.
\nThe strawberries can’t be eaten,
\nthe Cumber is on the Ledge.<\/p>\n

My tea gets colder and colder,
\nMy arms stretch up to the sky.
\nI can’t rip the white clouds open,
\nbut I’ll have a jolly good try.<\/p>\n

You are my consolation
\nand comfort this Whitsuntide,
\nO brown-tinged rhododendrons
\nBorn on the Other Side.<\/p>\n

MY HOOLA HOOP<\/strong>
\n2 am<\/em><\/p>\n

Of all the worlds I’ve lived in
\nthis is probably the best.
\nI’ve got a wife and daughter
\nand a cosy little nest.<\/p>\n

They talk about a Pure Land
\nfifty billion miles away,
\nbut mine is deep within my heart
\nand Christ it’s there to stay.<\/p>\n

I stretch before my altar
\ndrawing power from the floor.
\nGod willing, naked traffic
\nwith the person I adore.<\/p>\n

VENUS and CUPID<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Goddess of Love gets angry
\nin a beautiful sweet-tempered way.
\nShe’s not altogether happy
\nwith some of the things I say.<\/p>\n

One is not always served best
\nby getting the things one desires.
\nMadame Blavatsky noticed
\nthat water extinguishes fires.<\/p>\n

However we look at the problem,
\nfrom up or down, left or from right,
\na Lover is always a Winner
\nas long as the Loved-one’s in sight.<\/p>\n
