Craniometric and Skeletal Analysis

An assessment of ethnicity can be made by measurement and computer analysis of specific landmark points around the cranium.

The approximate age, sex and stature of the individual can be assessed by the examination of the skeleton.

Key areas for age analysis are epipheasial fusing, tooth eruption, dental attrition in archaeological specimens pubic symphysis, cranial sutures and skeletal deterioration.

Key areas for determining the sex of an individual are the examination of the pelvis, the skull, pubic symphysis and general skeletal appearance i.e. general size/muscle attachments.

Stature of an individual can be assessed by metrical analysis of the femoral shaft.

Obviously it may also be possible to gain information about all the above (and more) from recent forensic cases if clothing remains etc are present in association with the remains.

The above analysis is always done if a facial reconstruction is to be carried out, together with an assessment of any pre-existing pathology that would affect the face.
